Using Statistics to Cause Spammers Pain is an interesting idea for going on the offensive in the war against spammers. Marty Lamb builds on the ideas first layed out by Paul Graham in A Plan for Spam wonders what might happen if bandwidth was throttled based on the “spamminess” of a message. I’m not going to steal Marty’s thunder, so click on over and read the article for yourself :-)

In an interview by Paul Festa, paulf@cnet.com, Dave Winer (one of the grandfathers behind blogging) speaks about Harvard’s recent decision to hire him as a fellow and educate the university on the idea of blogging. Blogging comes to Harvard also covers why blogging won’t be going away any time soon.

I’ve finally come across a Christian news site that I’m comfortable with. Christdot is a news site based on the community concept popularized by geek web site Slashdot.org. It’s also the first Christian news site were I don’t feel like I’m at the Republican National Convention…

Caught a tidbit on NPR’s All Things Considered about Bush’s pet project, the missle defense system. Haven’t been able to verify it yet, so I’ll just have to put up with all those conservatives out there who are undoubtably saying “NPR is a liberal propoganda machine”.

Anyhow, the tidbit was to the effect that the administration wants the system in place by mid next year. In order to achieve this, they’ll be pushing to exempt the missle defense system from operational testing.

Wait - let me try to understand this. In a bearish economy, facing attacks from an enemy known for unconvetional methods (terrorists, in case anyone’s been asleep), we’re spending trillions of dollars to defend against some Cold War relics - and now you’re trying to tell me they won’t even be tested properly?!?

Wow, do I feel safe.

Hopefully we’re through the worst of the technical difficulties experienced this last week. For those unaware, I lost about a week and a half of postings for a little while due to some geeky stuff going on behind the scenes. I think, I hope, that all of that is taken care of - for now, all of those missing postings (anything after Feb. 3rd) are back.

Alrighty, it appears we’re having technical difficulties. My site was moved to a new server, and they apparently moved the database sometime just after February 3rd, which means scribbles is missing about a week and a half of postings. I’ve put in a request to have the database restored again, so hopefully this post will eventually disappear, replaced by my lost postings…

Good news and bad news…

The good news - Canada has offered to help the U.S. in the war on terrorism! They have pledged 2 battleships, 6000 troops, and 10 fighter jets.

The bad news - with current exchange rates, that comes out to 2 canoes, a mountie, and a couple of flying squirrels.

MacNN is carrying an article on Microsoft’s latest attempt at an imitation of Apple’s Switchers advertising campaign. For those who missed it, their last attempt at this was a total flop.

Konfabulator

Geek Stuff Comments Off

I caught a tidbit on Wired about a new app for Mac OS X called Konfabulator. One of the guys behind Konfabulator is of Kaleidoscope fame (forget his name, it’s in the Wired article). Anyhow, I’ve been playing around with Konfabulator, and it’s definitely cool. The site was extremely slow when I hit it (popularity hurts), and I’m guessing it’ll continue to be slow, as this one will be a big hit in the Mac world. If you’re using Mac OS X, grit your teeth, fight your way through the web site, and get your hands on it.
