Horrible news – NASA lost communication with space shuttle Columbia shortly before it was supposed to land this morning. I was very little when the Challenger exploded [2], but I remember my parents’ reactions to the event, or even photos of the event years after. I hope and pray that that tragedy is not repeated.
According to the news, the shuttle was traveling at Mach-6, meaning that there was no way for the crew to eject. They were also at 200,000 feet (once again, traveling at Mach-6), meaning that a terrorist attack is highly unlikely.
More updates – eye witnesses report that the shuttle broke up in the atmosphere with significant pieces coming off the rear during re-entry.
