Scientific American: Make Your Own Rules
Hire a lawyer, write your own law, enforceable for 20 years. Maybe once a few of these have started to impact the system, politicians and judges will begin to take notice.

Apple Event with ‘announcements that will be music to your ears’
So the date is set – April 28. And just when I thought all that junk about Apple buying Universal Music was starting to die down. The number one reason I’m looking forward to the announcements is that they’ll put an end to any Apple-Universal Music buyout speculation.
According to this brief New Scientist article, women may be up to 20 percent slower than men in navigating a computer-generated 3D world. Of course, no one thought to provide directional facilities in this 3D world, which would lend a significant advantage to women…
“Yes, can you tell me how to get to Virtual Main Street? My husband’s lost and he won’t ask for directions…”
Jokes aside, this makes me curious as to what gender-differences exist (and hence, should be accounted for) when dealing with UIs. This fits into my larger curiousity about how to design UIs that adapt to different learning styles. Educational approaches have been learning to adapt to these learning styles for years, but I’ve never seen a synthesis of knowlege from that field with UI knowledge.
Wired 11.05: Inside the Soul of the Web
I’m filing this under Geek Stuff, but I hope that doesn’t deter the non-geeks from reading. Anyone who uses Google, or is interested in the human side of the Web, should find this article interesting.
Phoenix and Minotaur to be renamed Firebird and Thunderbird
So there you have it. Now we’ve got Camino, Firebird, and Thunderbird. Personally, I think Macs got the short end of the stick (once again)
“Tabitha Christy Gevjan was born at 2:42am. She weighed 5 lbs, 1.4 ozs. She has a head full of inch long black hair and is a very beautiful baby.”
That was the word from Julie Wall – congratulations to Rob and Jill!
I’m going to be tweaking the blog over the next few days to fit in with the upcoming redesign of kyleandkelly.com. My apologies in advance if things look a bit funny, out of place, or they just don’t work.
Report: Apple may buy Universal Music | CNET News.com
Well, this one’s spread like wildfire. Personally, I don’t hold much stock in any Apple-related speculations reported in mainstream media; I lived through way too many “Apple is dying” articles in the early 90s.
Not to say that it’s not true, but I’m not believing anything until I hear it from Apple’s mouth.
Update: Alright, this sounds much more reasonable – there’s a posting on Macminute.com summarizing a New York Times article, which I will now also summarize
Basically, Vivendi (Univeral’s parent company) is looking at cutting some debt by selling off Universal Music. Apple expressed some interest in relation to their soon-to-open online music service. There were discussions between Apple and Vivendi about possibly working out a mutually beneficial arrangement, be that an Apple investment in Universal Music, or Apple purchasing a part of Universal Music (presumably a part relating to online distrubution of music), or maybe even Apple purchasing the whole thing.
But it all sounds like brainstorming to me – personally, I don’t see Apple getting involved in the traditional music business. I think they’re looking at setting up some kind of partnership with one or more of the major companies, so they’ll have access to that company’s collection. They’re not going to close the door on any type of partnership because access to that music is vital to the success of their service. Which, in this case, the rumor mill blew way out of proportion.
Now that ‘cuse has finally won the Big One in an exciting fashion, it’s time to tally the totals for the 850th Almost Annual Adams Family NCAA Division I Men’s BB Tournament Pick’em!!! (whew)
In what will undoubtedly be a hotly disputed tally (once she sees this post), Kyle eeked out Kelly, 93 to 92.
Keep reading for the round-by-round blows and more commentary.
I haven’t posted much on the war, as I’ve been torn. Certainly most of the bloggers out there are opposed to the war – seems to be a common view among the blogging demographic. And I’m still not going to get into my personal opinion – that’s going to require a longer entry. Anyhow, I found this to be an interesting story with a happy ending…
