Justice Department decries ‘terrorist tipoff’ amendment

So why should you take ACLU’s side on this? Think about the implications of the word “terrorist” – it’s a slippery slope. Certainly the abortion protesters that bomb clinics and shoot doctors are terrorists, in the true sense of the word.

Suppose a liberal-minded Attorney General were to extend that to some less-radical forms of protest. Say, for example, pro-lifers that picket clinics with gruesome pictures of abortions. A good lawyer could stretch “terrorism” to cover this as well, which would mean the government could search their homes without prior notification.

Last I checked the results of the CNN poll that accompanied the story, the majority were overwhelmingly in favor of giving the government this power, which really ticks me off.

There’s good reason for people across the whole spectrum of political and ideological persuasions to oppose giving the government this power. Remember above all, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Well everything’s moved out of the apartment and I’ll be heading back today to clean some spots in the carpet and the refrigerator. Then we should be set to hand over the keys. Unpacking is a different story all together as most of the boxes are still in the garage.

We’re still working on finishing off the painting; the office is almost done and we’ve got re-touching to do in the dining room. All of the rooms are starting to look pretty sharp, if you ignore all the junk lying, half-unpacked, around the room :-)

Well, the moving is about 90% complete. This weekend we moved most of the office over, including the desks, which means that all of the big stuff is out of the house. I’ll be picking up a load on my way home from work each night and I hope to have everything out by this weekend. We’ll clean this weekend and turn in our keys next week.

Then I’ll have to fire up the unpack-o-meter :-)

We’ve done major redecorating on the living room, dining, kitchen, master bedroom and one of the basement bedrooms (which is being converted into a home office). Not because we had to – indeed the rooms were in really really nice condition – but because we wanted to. Home decorating is fun.

Most of the rooms only need touch up work, the home office being the only room still under heavy work. I’ll post pictures once we wrap things up; some of the rooms are quite dramatic, given that they were a nice bland beige before. My guess is that some of our decorating choices are a bit too dramatic for some tastes, but such is our perogative because this is our house :-)

We still have no Internet access at the house, so expect updates to be infrequent and erratic.

A bit premature, I know, but we’re in the process of painting our new house, moving into it, hosting my parents, celebrating our first anniversary (the marriage-type anniversary) AND celebrating the Fourth of July! Whew. Don’t be surprised if there’s little to no activity for the next few weeks. I promise to post plenty of pictures when the dust has settled.

Well, one of them anyhow. Round of applause for Nathan Kemler – he’s the new grand overseer director type at the Grand Rapids Public Museum.

Well, OK, more like he was hired into a two-year position overseeing exhibits or something along those lines. But it means he and the lovely Bethany Kemler will be moving back here after a several year stay in Wisconsin. Here’s to the newly formed craft and video game circles…
