I’ve just witnessed one of the most incredible football games I’ll ever see. The Colts came from 21 points behind and four minutes left in the game to beat last year’s Super Bowl champs, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Unfortunately, the taste of victory is bittersweet, tainted by what is at least a controversial call by the referee, if not flat-out wrong.
The evening started out as Keen, Calvin, Gauntlet and I got together for a good old Monday Night Football party. Calvin made some chili and bread, I brought the beverages and some more food, and Gauntlet brought the Playstation 2 (Keen brought nothing, but no surprise there
After a little pre-game PS 2, we settled in.
I’ll spare you the play-by-play run down, and point you to “ESPN’s re-cap”:http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/recap?gameId=231006027 instead.
Several points:
# The MNF crew decided to mic up Keyshawn Johnson (KJ). For those who aren’t hardcore football fans, KJ is an outspoken wide receiver for the Bucs. Which basically means he’s full of himself and not afraid to talk it up. The first audio clip they played featured KJ pestering some coach (the offensive coordinator?) to get him the ball, because he alsways put up big numbers on MNF, and always dominated others “from his class”. That phrase refered to other players picked in the ‘96 draft (KJ was the number one pick), and was aimed at Marvin Harrison.
# Harrison finished the game with 176 yds., 2 TDs. KJ finished with 62 yds., no TDs. Domination alright. I love it.
# Even the controversial call can’t take away the Colts’ 28 points in the 4th quarter, and 21 points in the last four minutes. And all against the _best defense in the league_.

I am glad I stayed up for it, although I admit flipping to watching a movie on another channel for portions of the game and then returning to watch the end. Its always nice to see an arrogant, trash-talking team go down hard. Maybe this game will mess them up psychologically and give the Redskins a chance to beat them next week. I can always hope.
