Now that Kyle and I are getting things back in order after the power outage, we decided we should probably clean up the yard post wind storm. It’s kinda nice in a way because the power of the storms pretty much took all the leaves off the trees so we won’t have to do this chore again, but on the other hand there are a lot of leaves in our yard! We spent the daylight hours of today raking and bagging our leaves. It was actually quite nice to get into the yard and enjoy the day. All in all though, we still only got about 2/3 of the yard done. 500 gallons of leaves so far! Well, hopefully we’ll be able to finish tomorrow.

Southwest Michigan got buffeted with a wind storm last night. Some rain, a smattering of sleet, a few flurries of snow, but mostly just wind.

The strongest verified wind speed I’ve heard was 73 MPH (about 118 KMH for our metric friends); most of the winds were in the 40-60 MPH (64-97 KPH) range. They were steady, beginning in the early afternoon and still gusting the following morning (as I write this post).

They were also responsible for our loss of power.

Nothing like coming home from 12 hours of work to find your home has no electricity :-) So our home is a lovely 50 degrees F (16 degrees C) and dropping (the high today is 35 degrees F, -1 degree C), which nicely negates any potential for food spoilage in the fridge. We’re taking precautions to protect Alex and Colonel Brandon (our Beta fish), but I think Colonel Brandon is in for a rough time of it. He’ll probably be re-located to Mom and Dad Johnson’s house, which still has power.

On the more sober side, this incident is just a little, tiny tiny taste of what Iraqis have been dealing with for months (probably getting close to a year). No fun.

Well, I’m sitting here at work and a high school marching band just went by. No, not outside. They just marched by, with the drum line playing, in the hallway. Cool. GFS is celebrating the opening of our “100th Marketplace store”:http://www.gfs.com/content_us/about_gfs/pressrelease_100MPstore.html.

If you’re unfamiliar with our Marketplace stores, happen to “live near one”:http://gfs.know-where.com/gfs/, and frequent places like Sam’s Club or Costco, I’d recommend stopping by for a quick look-see.

Why is it that Democrats generally seem to be more with it technologically? Apart from his “helped give birth to the Internet” comments, Al Gore is a very tech-savvy guy. Howard Dean’s currently one of the frontrunners for the Democratic candidate, in large part due to good use of the Internet, and specifically of blogs. Meanwhile, George W. Bush admits to “not be a gadget guy” and the Republican National Committee… well…

The RNC is running Microsoft IIS on Windows 2000 for their web server. The current uptime (how long the web server has gone without a reboot) is 4.26 days. The current uptime for the DNC’s web server (running Apache and Linux) is 445.02 days.

Just kinda feeds to whole “blind servants of big business” perception.
