Ketchup… catch up… get it? Aw, never mind.

Kelly and I were split the weekend before Memorial day–she was off to Boston and I was down in Indy for both of our younger sisters’ graduations. That Sunday (5/23) was Kelly’s 24th birthday. I expect she’ll be posting about her various gifts (ahem, Mrs. Non-poster).

On Memorial Day weekend we hung around and did a lot of nothing, and it felt good :-)
Memorial Day Sunday in Indy means the “Indy 500″:http://www.indy500.com/, and since they delay the TV coverage in central Indiana, the best place to watch the race is anywhere but. Like Michigan. The race was plagued by bad weather, resulting in the first rain-shortened race since Johnny Rutherford won way back in the 70’s. The start of the race was delayed, and twenty some laps in the race was once again stopped for rain. I later found out that the same storm system that ended the race also generated a tornado which “Kathy and Eric followed”:http://www.ericandkathy.net/Photos/Tornado/index.html.

The racing got underway about two hours later and the rain held off long enough to get most of the way through the race (180 of 200 laps). Buddy Rice, racing for “Letterman”:http://www.cbs.com/latenight/lateshow/-Rahal, “took the win from the pole”:http://www.indystar.com/articles/1/151171-7741-188.html–the racing, when it did occur, was pretty exciting with plenty of passing and near-misses. At one point the cars when four-wide into a turn. ABC had a new (to me) camera angle, dubbed the visor cam. The camera was attached to the inside of the driver’s helmet, so you could see what their view was from the cockpit.

Our family had the usual competition, with six of us (Mom, Dad, myself, Kelly, Katie and Doug) picking drivers from the field of 33. For those not counting, we each had a team of 5 drivers with 3 drivers left over. We have a rule that the leftover drivers go to the first people to lose a driver, and it turned out to be crucial for this year’s victor. Drum roll… Kelly!

Two of the first three cars to drop out were hers, and one of her replacement drivers went on to finish in the top 15; her replacements were the difference between a first and last place finish.

We’re now in the middle of a giant spring cleaning (yeah, I know it’s summer) which should end in a garage sale. Speaking of, I’ve got more cleaning to do…
