We have a problem. I just noticed that the Scribbletrivia section (left column if you’re in the Scribbles portion of the web site) showed me as playing four Gwen Stefani songs in a row.
These songs are updated on the web site in real time, based on what’s being played in iTunes on our home computer. When Kelly is logged into her account, the stuff she plays shows up under her name. When my account is being used, it shows up under my name.
Kelly, no more listening to iTunes unless you’re logged into your own account

h3. Numero Uno
* “Roomba”:http://www.irobot.com/consumer/product_detail.cfm?prodid=17 ($200; please go in with someone else–or better yet: several someone elses–on this, otherwise $200 is a ridiculously expensive birthday gift. I would recommend buying directly from iRobot, since that includes automatic enrollment in a nice Preferred Customer Program)
h3. The Rest (in no particular order)
* $15-$25 for shareware applications (in check form to make it easy on everyone)
* “Indigo Home Automation software”:http://www.perceptiveautomation.com/indigo/ ($80-$90)
* “PowerLinc USB X10 Interface”:http://www.smarthome.com/1132U.html ($30-$40, but notice that you can get a special deal on the X10 interface + one other item for $35 when you buy the Indigo software above. Since the best deal is when these two gifts are bought as a package, it is another good one to go in with multiple someones.)
* “iTunes Gift Certificate”:http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?family=iTMSCardsCertificates ($10-$20)
* “Katamari Damacy”:http://www.namco.com/games/katamari_damacy/ ($20)
* “iPod shuffle Sports Case”:http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/71208/wo/YI3awbcjttGd3NSQMMG1fLEVEr5/2.0.0.11.1.0.6.9.21.0.1.0.1.1.0.1.0.3 ($30)
* “Pirates of Silicon Valley”:http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0009NSCS0/102-4505447-6449729 ($14 when you pre-order from Amazon; it doesn’t come out ’till August, but I’ll cope.)
* “Moleskine Pocket Sketchbook”:http://www.mojolondon.co.uk/product.php?sku=02125 ($8)
* “Space”:http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0789310651/37signals/002-0779657-0100010 ($19)
Absolutely positively _no clothes_ (sorry Kelly).

Chicago has a new web site that matches police reports up with Google maps, so you can see “all of the crimes committed at 3 AM on May 5th”:http://www.chicagocrime.org/2005/may/05/3am/. More interestingly, you can “subscribe to an RSS feed for crimes in your neighborhood”:http://www.chicagocrime.org/rss/. I have no idea what crimes are being committed in my neighborhood, but I’d sure like to know, especially given “a recent experience”:http://www.livejournal.com/users/secretpineapple/91416.html…

Well, work is always interesting. Today as I was going about my day a patient called out to me and said, “hurry, it’s an emergency!” So I quickly went in the room to find him on the toilet. He was having problems doing his buisiness apparently. So I did what any good nurse would, I threatened him with an enema. Well, this threat seemed to help. He then started yelling: “Wait! Wait a minute!” There was some grunting and after a few minutes I asked how things were going. The patient replied, “well hell, look at it, it’s as big as a squirrel.”

Plan B is one of the “morning after” emergency contraceptives currently being contested by pro-life advocates. *Stop it.* Unless you are a female who has never taken birth control (or for the husbands, if you have never encouraged your wife to take birth control for family planning purposes), then you are propogating a double standard.
Plan B is essentially a large dose of birth control to prevent ovulation (the release of an unfertalized egg). It is still disputed as to whether or not it, _or any other birth control pill_, might prevent a fertalized egg from attaching to the inner lining of the uterus. The point is that Plan B is no different from traditional birth control pills, and if you rely on those for family planning, you have no right opposing Plan B.
Note that Plan B is different from RU-486, which is a true abortion pill in that it specifically induces premature delivery of a fertalized egg.

“Peek in a Geek” is a chance for me to write a little about what goes on in my head when working on geeky stuff. It may be scary, may be amusing, hopefully always entertaining to see what goes through a geek’s brain.
Here’s an analogy for what it’s like solving a problem with a computer program. When you first start out working on the problem, it’s like floating in space–you can go in any direction you want, with no restraints.
The catch is, as soon as you start to move in one direction, walls start to appear and close in around you. The further you go in a particular direction, the more constrained you get. Eventually you may discover you’re in a dead end, so you’ve got to go back to square one and pick another direction to head off in.
It’s like wandering around in a 3D maze, only the paths available to you aren’t immediately obvious. You may end up in a dead end, or you may end up at the maze, but by a much longer route than you could have taken. The concentration it takes to wander through this mental maze can be physically tiring at the end of an eight hour day. Not as physically tiring as, say, delivering GFS product (which I did for one day with one of our delivery drivers), but more so then one might expect for a desk jockey.
