I’m a little behind in blogging, but that’s fodder for another post. At the end of June, I went off to a programming conference (JavaOne) in San Francisco (“photos”:http://www.flickr.com/photos/kyleandkelly/sets/513919/). I returned on the Friday of the July 4th weekend.
Kelly and I left for a mini-vacation to celebrate our third anniversary on Sunday. We went down to “Serenity Springs”:http://www.serenity-springs.com/ in Michigan City, IN. I’d highly recommend it to couples look for a romantic weekend get-away.
After a hectic month of June, our stay at Serenity Springs was a much-needed escape from reality. The whole experience at Springs is setup to force you to relax and take it slow. It’s definitely not for folks who vacation by being active and on-the-go
Our cabin was a one room affair, with a reading loft. The bed, couch, dining room table, and an in-floor jacuzzi tub are all centered around a corner fireplace/TV. You park your car at the office upon arrival and the staff take you via carriage back to your cabin. Once in your cabin, you communicate with the outside world via a butler door (there is no telephone).
The butler door is a small compartment in the wall, with doors that open to the inside and outside of the cabin. When you want something (food, movies, toiletries, etc.), you leave a note in the butler door and turn on an outside light to alert the staff. When they leave something in the butler door, they turn on an inside light to alert you. In short, you’re pretty well isolated from any outside contact.
One of the fun aspects to this system are the surprise deliveries. Throughout the day, various goodies show up in the butler door; baskets of fruit and muffins for breakfast, cheesecake for dinner, and smores for a nightly treat.
Between the treats, the utter lack of responsibility, and the alone-time we came home thoroughly refreshed and spoiled.
