A local landmark, the Doo Drop Inn, has closed. After serving delicious perch dinners and mouth-watering onion rings (among other things) to Muskegon for 71 years, the family-owned restaurant is retiring. The current owners are taking their well-deserved rest and the family’s third generation has gone outside of the restaurant business.

The Doo Drop Inn sign

Our waitress on that last night was a volunteer; she’d worked at Doo Drop nine years earlier. Kelly and I were there because our wedding reception was at the Doo Drop Inn. Roger and Nancy were there because Doo Drop had been a community fixture for the working class in Muskegon; the local Democrats always had their election night party at the Doo Drop. The folks at the table next to us were there because his mother, and her mother before, had always eaten at the Doo Drop when visiting Muskegon. A long line of people, all with their own special memories, waited outside the restaurant for their last taste of the onion rings. We had read about the closing in the paper the night before and immediately knew our dinner plans were set.

Nancy enjoys one last cold one at the Doo Drop

Oh the onion rings. So hot, with just the right mix of sweetness to counter the onion taste. We decided the special taste came from a blend of seasonings in the batter and a well-selected onion. Our two large orders were devoured within five minutes of arriving at the table. Candie and Alex asked the waitress if their dinners came with the all-you-can-eat salad bars (the rest of our orders did); she replied, “Sure. What did you order again?” It was a night for celebrating, not get prickly about who could and couldn’t eat at the salad bar. We left satisfied, full, and each secretly hoping that someday, someone would resurrect the Doo Drop and carry on its proud tradition.

Funny story to share. I'm an Episcopal priest. On my home answering machine, in addition to giving the number for the church, says "and if this is a pastoral emergency, call me on my cell phone. Well, one day my sister and nephew called me on the cell phone. They said they had a pastoral emergency...the Doo Drop Inn had closed! Neither my sister nor I live in Muskegon any more and the Doo Drop was the first and last place we wanted to go every time we were home. No where in the country is there comparable perch and onion rings! We wonder why no one bought the restaurant and the recipes or just the recipes to serve elsewhere? It was a sad day when the Doo Drop closed.

My parents took us to Doo Drop Inn for dinner often, but my favorite memories are of Christmas Eve dinner when we were children. Love the perch, onion rings, coleslaw and garlic toast. So sad when they closed. Would love the recipe for onion rings, coleslaw and their garlic toast.

I was able to visit Doo Drop Inn quite often when I was a little girl, my mother was a waitress there. On weekends when my grandma would babysit me she would take me to dinner there and also get to see my mom and her co-workers. I also remember asking to sit by the seahorse plexi-glass. When it came to my favorite dinner it was the wing ding basket, the perch came later as an adult. Through the years I grew to like the homemade Bleu Cheese dressing. My mom had made this dressing there and can't seem to remember the recipe. If there is anyone that knows the recipe and is willing to share it I would greatly appreciate it.( 35 years later) Thank -You for the memories also!

The Do Drop Inn was where my parents would go on their anniversary, leaving my sister and I at our grandparents house in North Muskegon (Horton Rd.). Sometimes, my parents would take us. I always wanted to sit next to the plexi-glass seahorse and plant window things. What I would give to see one of those again! My fondest memories are of waiting in the entrance lobby for my parents to finish. My sister and I would pretend we were adults and play with the cigarette machine and the star scroll dispenser; going up and down the red carpeted steps and sliding down the handrail. Folks always seemed to get a kick out of us as they would enter and leave (we were always very polite). Sometimes my dad would give me the quarter or fifty cents to get a star scroll horoscope.

My dad was always fond of the liver and onions. I loved the onion rings and popcorn shrimp. I wish I could go back one more time!

Thank you for some of the Great Memories of Doo Drop Inn. My parents took me there when I was a little boy for PERCH. I just turned fifty (50) . When my Dad passed one morning in a Muskegon Hospital, my bothers and when there in memory of Dad and had the platters of Perch ..........Its what he would have wanted us to do. Shortly after that we hear of Doo Drop closing and I drove 3 hours to take my mom for one final dinner with our remaining family.

It was a great place with great people..... Now on to my question, Does anyone know how the perch was deep fried. I can't find any breading that duplicates the great flavor. HELP!
  • As close as i can get.

Mix a little sugar with mustard and Miracle Whip then combine with shredded cabbage.

So sorry to hear of your closing. I grew up in Muskegon and your resturant has been a household name for generations. I now live in NC and wanted to get a gift certificate for my family there for Christmas. Good Luck to your future.
  • Thought about the Doo Drop Inn this evening here in San Antonio, Texas. I have the recipe for the cole slaw and made that tonight, but Texas just doesn't have the terrific perch that's found in Michigan. I miss the onion rings too. Anyone have any of their recipes?
  • Nancy
Very nice, Kyle. You did a great job of capturing the moment. My mouth is watering for just one golden ring.
    Ummm.....
