So today started out pretty good. Baby O slept pretty good and woke up at 5am and actually went back to sleep for a couple more hours. I was very excited to get some extra z’s. We spent some time talking and cooing at each other and then I went to change his diaper. Wow, so I’ve experienced the little pee fountain before and have a blocking washcloth on that part, but I was not prepared for what came next. I carefully cleaned his precious bottom when I felt a bit of wind on my fingers, as a nurse no big deal, I’ve been farted on numerous times. The difference came when I went to dispose of the wet wipe. Flying Poo! I am not kidding it flew a couple feet before splattering on the wall. Now when my patients poop on me they at least have the decency to let gravity take it’s course. Man someone warn me before the next bodily tragedy strikes!

Well, yesterday was my birthday and it was fabulous. I started out the day with some wasting of time and then straight into a morning nap. All that nothingness really can make you sleepy. On seeing the Jehovah’s Witnesses parading in the neighborhood, I decided it was time to go.

After my stealthy escape, my dad, Baby A., and I went out to run a few errands, get some Jimmy John’s, and go to my mom’s office to enjoy our lunch. My mom suggested a coffee from Starbucks after lunch and I never turn down an opportunity for a good latte. At Starbucks, I pulled up to the window to pay and the barista said, “We have an extra caramel frap here, would you like it?” This was my first birthday gift of the day.

Whee

Once we got home, my baby was extra smiley, so we got his first smiling pictures (another great gift for the occasion). Some scrapbooking and cooking ensued until dinner when my mom made for me deluxe tacos and the most amazing chocolate raspberry torte (I want some again now). Then I recieved some very cool gifts from my family and my last gift for the day was the Lost season finale. What a perfect birthday!

The Wet Wipe Manifesto has given me the courage to go public: I am a wet wipe man. Hat tip to Kottke.

A recent AppleInsider article began with this odd sentence:

AppleInsider has learned that Apple’s popular line of iMac personal computers are about to undergo a substantial facelift that will showcase striking new industrial designs aimed at leaving both competitors and onlookers smitten.

And that’s news… how?

“Apple’s new design is aimed at mediocrity and blending in.” “Apple’s design goals included being as ugly as possible.” Now that would have been news.

My cousin Matt recently sent me an e-mail with the following photo.

Adams Cousins

Matt, I’ll see your photo and raise it a video:

For those less familiar, Matt is the one on the big wheel and I’m the one in the football helmet that he’s trying to run over. It’s a good time to start pulling out the family memories since we have a wedding coming up.

I’ve been playing around with the latest craze in social software: Twitter. The basic idea is a simple messaging hub that connects people together. You send in messages via the web, text messaging from your cellphone, IM, or through a growing number of other ways.

Twitter then routes your message out to all of your friends who are following you. The message may reach your friends by any and/or all of the same ways (IM, cellphone, etc.) that the message came in. The end result is that a network of friends and family can carry on conversations regardless of the medium (IM, cellphone, the web, e-mail). If this still sounds confusing, your best bet might be to just give it a try. My username is kadams54. To my non-geek readers: feel free to stop here. Go give Twitter a try. Geeks, read on…

The web in action: Kottke mentions an insightful interview with Jonathan Rauch. The name is vaguely familiar and the excerpts Kottke includes are compelling enough that I head out to Wikipedia and do a little reading on Jonathan Rauch himself.

My eye is drawn to a paragraph on Rauch’s article, “Caring for Your Introvert: The habits and needs of a little-understood group”, so I follow the link and save the article for later reading. I go back and skim the interview, uncovering the following gem:

  1. reason: You have a favorite bit of advice to younger people, don’t you?
  2. Rauch: Don’t go to law school unless you want to be a lawyer.
  3. reason: That would thin the herd pretty quickly, wouldn’t it?
  4. Rauch: Yeah, it sure would.
  5. reason: That might be the most powerful reform idea that you have.
  6. Rauch: I was going to say you could probably dump the whole rest of the interview and just print that.

I e-mail it off to my dad (a paralegal) and continue on with my day. Lunch break rolls around and I read the “Caring for Your Introvert” article. Brilliant!

While Kyle was busy listening to the NFL draft picks this year, baby boy and I had some fun with the camera.

Baby and Touchdown Bear

As I was going through the mall the other day I saw an adorable picture of a baby balanced on a football. I was thinking that this would make a great gift for the new dad, so I went home to try it myself. Getting a baby to balance on a football is very difficult however. They must have some sort of trick at the photo place. We had fun anyway and he even gave me a bit of a smile for my efforts.

Mom went off yard sale hunting, leaving baby and I with some father-son bonding time. We chilled out and followed the NFL draft via ESPN radio; Baby A gave his football outfit a pre-season workout.

Draft Day: Baby A

Overall he was pretty pleased with the picks, though surprised that the Colts went offense with their first two picks. He was really hoping they could pick up Alan Branch… he’s a big fan of those Michigan players.
