Snubbing a YouTube debate seems like a bad idea to me; the Republican party already has an image problem with being elitist. Passing up a debate that features questions directly stated by a wide variety of folks over the Internet only reinforces that perception.
Yesterday was the first chance I’d had to play around with Yahoo Pipes: wow. The UI just blows me away for a web app, and that’s just the UI; the application itself is also solid. As Dave Brondsema and I wired, transformed, and otherwise massaged data from a variety of applications, I started to wonder how I might be able to use this in my job.
This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending BarCamp Grand Rapids. For those scratching their heads, BarCamp is an international network of technology conferences; they’ve held these events in places as varied as Belfast and Bangalore. It’s basically a chance for anyone interested in technology to get together with others in their area and talk shop.
NPR’s Fresh Air had an interview with author Peggy Orenstein today; one of the things she said in the interview rang true for me. When asked what surprised her about being a parent:
The absolute vulnerability that you feel… my heart is walking around on the outside my body now and if anything happens to my heart it’s going to kill me.
We had a lot of fun today. We went and had Baby O’s first professional baby pictures taken. It wasn’t an ideal day seeing as our little guy yet again was not interested in sleeping for his nap, which made him a bit cranky during his photo shoot. The Sears photography people were very understanding and even gave us time in the middle to feed and change him. O has been amazing me everyday lately. He is rolling over from his tummy to his back and is talking up a storm. He still prefers to communicate in grunts, but there are some vowels thrown in now too. I never before understood how much the little things can matter to you, but little O has taught me to enjoy everything. As always you can see more pictures in the Baby A flickr pool.
How cool is this? Apparently a movie version of the classic “Get Smart” TV show is in the works. Steve Carrell is the perfect pick as Maxwell Smart, and I like Anne Hathaway and Alan Arkin as Agent 99 and The Chief (respectively). There’s a trailer after the jump.
