The site got a makeover today, for a number of reasons:

  1. Kelly has put up with dull, drab designs for the past five years, so it was about time she got a pink theme.
  2. The old site was falling apart at the seams; Flickr photos weren’t loading, among other problems.
  3. The software running the site (WordPress) badly needed to be updated.

I’m hoping the current theme (i3Theme, Snazzy Pink, Center Edition) will be a temporary look until I can get a real, honest-to-goodness custom design in place. Until then, enjoy!

You can now browse our photos again. We don’t have all of the same photos up yet (we’re missing a number of the earlier albums), but it’s a start. You can see the last nine photos posted at the bottom of each page or click on the “view all” link to go to the photos page. Enjoy!

All four of our semi-regular visitors may have noticed: the site looks a little different. I finally got around to a much talked-about change and the site is finally settling in at its new digs. What does that mean for you?

First, the biggie: comments work again, yay! Second, the little things. You may be wondering where the photos and memories (i.e. the wiki with funny stories from our college days) have gone. They’re still around, though both will also be going through some changes to fit into the new world. I just haven’t had the chance yet to pull them out of the moving boxes, dust them off, and put them on shelves somewhere. With that said, you can get a “sneak preview of the photos”:http://www.flickr.com/photos/kyleandkelly/ over at Flickr.

This site has always been a work in progress, but I hope that will be especially evident in the upcoming months. The current design of the site was chosen because it provides a solid foundation, but it’s not the final product. Rather than creating a new masterpiece and unleashing it on the world (which was taking forever and part of the reason the move took so long) I’ve decided to split it up into smaller, more digestable pieces. Don’t be too surprised if you notice small changes each time you visit. On the other hand, it may sit stagnant for awhile. Unlike many of those home design TV shows, I’m not on a deadline :-)

If you visit the site on a regular basis (yeah, all five of you), you may have noticed the site’s been a bit ill-tempered as of late. You get a cranky error when posting comments, pages are slow to load, etc. I apologize.

I’m working on a solution, but this site is a spare-time project, which I have little of right now. Hopefully in the next month or so the problems will be resolved. The downside is that it may get worse before it gets better. kyleandkelly.com may cease to exist for a couple of days in the near future. You’ll live.

Candie’s the big winner for posting the “200th comment”:http://www.kyleandkelly.com/scribbles/family_news/grounded/#comments on scribbles! What did she win? A big “yee ha”, delivered via IM.

I apologize to any visitors that may have experienced nasty 404s in the past week or so. As part of a “general site overhaul”:/scribbles/web_site_news/construction_in_progress/ I have been doing a lot of tinkering with scribbles. I have finished most of the man-behind-the-curtains work; all that’s left now is the tweaking (which is on-going anyhow).

I’m currently in (and have been in) the progress of overhauling the web site’s plumbing. Once finished, the site will be sleaker, easier to use, and cuter to boot. In the mean time, you might run into a few problems here and there, especially with this being the holidays and all; I apologize.

Short term, the style switcher (the buttons on the right side that changed the appearance of the site) are on a hiatus. Don’t worry, they’ll be back, new and improved. In fact, I decided that just changing the colors and patterns of the site wasn’t good enough–inspired by the “CSS Zen Garden”:http://www.csszengarden.com/ I’ve decided to have the next set of stylesheets make radical changes to the look and feel of the web site. I’ve also decided that since this is kyleandkelly.com, and should be reflective of our family, the next styles on deck will be:

* Pink Pout
* Electrabbit

Stay tuned…

Well, well well. My first trackback ping! Cool.

Speaking of, enabling trackbacks may be cool, but my trackback page is definitely not. I’ve got some work to do there; I’d like to just have trackbacks show up inline with comments. That seems to be pretty inline with what I’ve seen on “most”:http://www.oreillynet.com/ “sites”:http://www.lockergnome.com/.

Also, what’s this about trackback only working with “MT”:http://www.moveabletype.org/? As much as MT rocks, I’ve used trackback on a number of different sites and I’m fairly certain they’re not all running MT.

I’ve added a new section to the site – Memories is an area for collaborative storytelling. Confused? Well, I could tell you more, but that would spoil things, so just go visit Memories and find out for yourself. Right now the primary focus is on the college years, recently left behind.
